About Us
The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society was formed approximately 80 years ago to preserve and further the tradition of Scottish country dancing. Today there are branches worldwide and a wealth of published dance instructions and music.
The
majority of Scottish country dances are danced with a partner in a set
of 3, 4 or 5 couples. There are three tempos of music – reel, jig and the slower strathspey which is unique to the Scottish tradition. Dances are made up of different combinations and variations of set figures.
Scottish country dancing is open to people of all ages and backgrounds. It provides a fun and sociable form
of exercise. You don’t need to wear tartan or come with a partner. The
only requirements are a smile and flat, comfortable shoes!
The Peterborough and District Branch meets every Tuesday from 8.00pm to 10.00pm in St Mark’s Church Hall, Lincoln Road, Peterborough from September to May.
At the Tuesday class, experienced dancers and beginners dance together
and are guided through steps, figures and dances by a teacher. There is
a monthly advanced class for experienced dancers.
The
Branch holds two dances with live music during the year in October and
January. Other events include a St Andrew’s night meal and ceilidh
evenings.
The branch has a demonstration team available to provide displays at functions.
