DECEMBER NEWSLETTER – 2009

Dancing Classes

The last Tuesday class before Christmas is on December 15th, which will be a Social Dance. Please bring along food to share and join in dances chosen, and called, by members.

NOTE:- EXTRA CLASS on Thursday December 17th, for anyone who wants to join in assessing new dances, sent from RSCDS headquarters. The session will be led by James Williams, who has already been through some of the dances at the last Advanced Class. We look forward to as many members as possible, even if you don't normally attend the Advanced Classes.

Dancing in 2010 starts with the first class on Tuesday 5th January, which will also be taken by James, as Maimie is away.

Advanced Classes

As James and Hazel have the boys both at school they naturally wish to avoid school holidays. Therefore the Advanced Classes are not necessarily on the third Thursday of each month, so check the dates overleaf.

Christmas Cards

As an alternative to the Christmas card exchange, or as well for those who wish, there will be a Charity Box provided on December 15th. The chosen charity is 'Papworth Hospital', where Maimie's husband Jim received treatment and care.

Autumn Dance Review - Saturday October 17th

The last dance was not well supported, with the consequence that we made a loss of £53. However, members were very generous in providing raffle prizes, which minimised the loss.

New Year Charity Dance - Saturday January 16th

We again welcome back Ian Slater for our next Charity Dance at St. John's Church Hall. Dancing starts at 7:30pm prompt, so please arrive in good time if you want a seat with your friends. The programme of dances and cribs are available in class. Any profit from the dance will be added to the Papworth Hospital collection.

Income from the raffle will also go towards the collection for Papworth Hospital, so if you have any unwanted Christmas presents then the Committee would be pleased to accept them. If you are bringing raffle prizes on the night, please can you take them to Amanda, in the kitchen to sort.

St. Andrew's Meal - Tuesday November 24th

Thanks to Mike Pagella who made the arrangements at The Lady Anne's Hotel, where all enjoyed good food with excellent service. Entertainment by Vivien Moore and David Anderson rounded off a great evening.

RSCDS AGM at Perth

Chris and Elizabeth Rea attended the Perth AGM on the 7th November, thanks to the hospitality of Rod and Rhoda Purcell. Financially the RSCDS is in much more professional hands, with budgets being set, and accountability in all areas, such as the Winter and Summer Schools. Despite the fall in investments and reduced membership there was a net positive income of £2,777. Through the use of experts, claims for VAT realised £95k (£70k net), with a further outstanding claim for £100k. Extra funds of £20k were required for website/database upgrade. To cover the cost of revamping the remaining books, plus issuing new recordings, £50k was taken from the Jean Milligan Fund, reducing it to £150k, but still above the minimum reserve level of £100k. The use of the fund for this was criticised by the Glasgow and Edinburgh Branches, but nobody else seemed bothered. There was to be no change to the membership subscription.

The only other item of dissension was an amendment to the Constitution, to give The Management Board powers to remove a member deemed to be not doing the job. This was approved, with limitations, through an amendment from Leicester.

DEMONSTRATIONS

We have again been requested to provide a demonstration team at the Deeping Show at the beginning of June. Would all those who wish to take part please put this above date in their diaries. Hazel will be in contact nearer to the time. Also, our auditor, Tony Davies, has asked for dancers to lead a Ceilidh Dance at the Wisbech Rotary Club, on January 26th. Although this is a Tuesday it is felt that we must support him, and our numbers are such that the class can still take place as well. Please can I have an indication from those willing to help.
